LOCAL STUDENTS TUTORING
OUR MISSION STATEMENT indicates that we are involved in missions, and we are involved locally, nationally, and internationally. One of the newest mission endeavors for Providence has been the Rama Road Tutoring program. This activity was inaugurated in January 2009 after many years of tutoring at the Jackson Park Housing Project.
In January 2009, we had a new Missions Center on our property and it was put to use when a group of mission-minded PROVIDENCE members decided to begin the program of providing tutoring to non-native English speaking children who attend the Rama Road Elementary School. Two days a week, the children, with the permission of their parents, are transported from the school to our facility. At the church, they are treated to a refreshment break, some general group activities, and then one-on-one tutoring related to the student's school studies. The tutoring supports the student's school academics, as well as, communications in English in the community. After the 1.5 hour activity, the students are transported to their homes.
SOME OF THE COMMUNITY MISSIONS PROGRAMS IN WHICH PROVIDENCE IS INVOLVED ARE LISTED BELOW:
CRISIS ASSISTANCE MINISTRY is one of the community agency that Providence has supported for many years. We have supported Crisis Assistance with funds and with many volunteer hours working in the facility. As the logo indicates, Crisis Assistance helps individuals and families with rent and utilities with dignity. This organization partners with many churches and agencies in the community to provide the basics of every day life for individuals and family in Mecklenburg County. Providence is most happy to be a partner with Crisis Assistance.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES, STRENGTHENING LIVES
During the construction of our Missions Center, we were unable to accommodate the "Family Promise" program. However, with a completed Missions Center we have been hosting the "Family Promise" families on four different weeks this year! Thanks to all our volunteers who have assisted with this mission endeavor.
A group of Charlotte churches has learned of a national ministry called Family Promise. The Family Promise ministry has assisted over 100 communities in establishing Interfaith Hospitality Networks. Each of these networks consists of 13 churches. Each of the 13 churches in a network hosts three or four families (but not more than 15 people) for one week, four times each year. The host church is responsible for supper, overnight accommodations, and breakfast. During the day, the families go to a counseling center operated by the local Interfaith Hospitality Network, and the children attend school.
On a national basis, the Interfaith Hospitality Networks have been amazingly successful. Last Year, 84% of the families found permanent housing within 50 days.
Four young adult Sunday School classes were eager to work with this program. Those classes were Covenant, Cornerstone, Faithworks, and Synago. Eric Cochran, a member of one of those classes, is the coordinator for Providence. The project has the approval of the Missions Committee, and the church in conference endorsed Providence's involvement. Since Providence's initial involvement in Family Promise, additional Sunday School classes have been participating in this significant missions effort to assist families to become self-sufficient in our community.

Providence has been involved in the "Room In the Inn" ministry for thirteen years. This program provides over-night lodging and two meals for homeless individuals in the Charlotte area during the fall and winter months. We are fortunate to have a number of dedicated individuals who have been involved throughout the years that Providence has been involved in this ministry. Additionally, other members of the church have been involved on a monthly or weekly basis as needed, including Sunday School Classes, families and individuals. Mark Noonan is the Room In The Inn Coordinator for Providence. This year, we are using our newly constructed Missions Center to accommodate the individuals assigned to us by the Room in the Inn program.
