ROOM IN THE INN
As of the last weekend in March, 2008, Providence has completed  twelve years  of participation in the "Room In the Inn" ministry.  This program provides over-night lodging and two meals for homeless individuals in the Charlotte area during the fall and winter months.  We are fortunate to have a number of dedicated individuals who have been involved throughout the years that Providence has been involved in this ministry. Additionally, other members of the church have been involved on a monthly or weekly basis as needed, including Sunday School Classes, families and individuals.  Mark Noonan is the Room In The Inn Coordinator for Providence.

"FAMILY PROMISE" Adopted by Providence

As of April 15, Providence had hosted "Family Promise" on three different weeks!  Thanks to all our volunteers who have assisted with this mission endeavor.

A group of Charlotte churches has learned of a national ministry called Family Promise. The Family Promise ministry has assisted over 100 communities in establishing Interfaith Hospitality Networks.  Each of these networks consists of 13 churches.  Each of the 13 churches in a network hosts three or four families (but not more than 15 people) for one week, four times each year.  The host church is responsible for supper, overnight accommodations, and breakfast.  During the day, the families go to a counseling center operated by the local Interfaith Hospitality Network, and the children attend school.

On a national basis, the Interfaith Hospitality Networks have been amazingly successful.  Last Year, 84% of the families found permanent housing within 50 days.

Four young adult Sunday School classes are eager to work with this program.  Those classes are Covenant, Cornerstone, Faithworks, and Synago.  Eric Cochran is the coordinator for Providence.  The project has the approval of the Missions Committee and the church in conference endorsed Providence's involvement.

NORTH CAROLINA BAPTIST DENTAL BUS

Each year, Providence hosts the North Carolina Baptist Dental Bus in connection with the Mecklenburg Baptist Nuring Association.  The Dental Bus is park on our property and staff by many Providence members as well as members from other churches.  Dentists and Hygenists volunteer their time to work on the clinic that is conducted on the bus which has two treatment rooms.  In conjunctions with the Urban Ministries, patients are enlisted, screened, and transported to the Dental Bus located Providence's property.  Through this ministry, approximately 60 individuals receive dental services that otherwise they would not have received.

JACKSON PARK MINISTRIES  APARTMENT RENOVATIONS

Providence has entered into a new phase of work at Jackson Park Ministries.  Under the leadership of Duncan Brewer, Steve Goad, and Jeff Hinson, we will work to renovate one or two apartments at the Jackson Park complex.  Jackson Park Ministries is attempting to get as many apartments prepared for residents as possible.  The program includes complete renovation of the apartments AND furnishing the apartments.  Through the program of Jackson Park Ministries, residents may use the apartment for up to one year.  During that year, the program works with the families to teach English, job training, money managements, and other life skills.  After one year, the residents graduate from the Jackson Park residency program.  Assistance is located local housing is provided and the furnishings of the apartment become the property of the "graduating" residents.

Special work days will be scheduled and announced to the congregation.  Some building materials are supplied by local companies and the renovation is under the supervision of a licensed contractor who is donating the time to this project.
