Dr. Al Cadenhead, Pastor/Senior Minister
Cadenhead

Dr. Al Cadenhead has served Providence as Senior Pastor since 1998. Previous pastorates include First Baptist Church, Vienna, Georgia; The Hill Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia; and First Baptist Church, High Point, NC. In the decade of the 70's Dr. Cadenhead served out of a chaplain's role, first in a medical setting and then for seven years as an Industrial Chaplain for a textile corporation.
          He is a graduate of Furman University with a BA in Religion and Psychology, and a Masters and Doctorate from Southern Theological Seminary.  As a writer, Dr. Cadenhead has authored five books and over a thousand published articles for newspapers during the past thirty years. He has done graduate work in the field of counseling and is accredited as a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and board certified through the American Psychotherapy Association.  Dr. Cadenhead has a passion for ministry and realizes that ministry can be accomplished through many different avenues.

Dr. David Jordan, Associate Pastor

David Jordan became the Associate Pastor at Providence in 2003.  In this position, he facilitates the Disciple Bible Study program including teaching classes in this program.  He is responsible for the pastoral care ministry, the Senior Adult Ministry, and Care Teams.  He supervises other ministries of the church and teaches numerous classes on a variety of subjects including Old and New Testament, Church History, Missions, World Religions, and Introduction to Spanish.    He facilitates interfaith events and learning opportunities.   David has preached in Spanish and French.  In addition, he has hosted international study and educational opportunities.
 

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Furman University, a Master of Divinity degree from Southern Seminary, and Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary.  He studied at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Ruschlikon, Switzerland.  He was pastor of Twinbrook Baptist Church in Rockville, Maryland from 1989 to 1997.   He was the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Rockingham, North Carolina prior to joining the staff of Providence.  In 2008, he taught at the Gypsy Smith School in Bucharest, Romania.  He has been involved in mission activities at Providence through international study, educational opportunities, and serving as an interpreter for mission teams from the church.  David and wife Beth have three children.  Beth is an ordained minister and serves as chaplain and and Clinical Pastoral Educational Supervisor in Carolinas medical Center, Northeast in Concord, NC.

Rev. James R. Martin, Church Business Administrator

 Jim Martin became the Church Business Administrator at Providence  in  February, 1997.  He is a native of Nashville, Tennessee.

His basic responsibilities are finance, personnel, facilities, publications, and telecommunications in addition to ministries assignments.  He was ordained by the First Baptist Church of Fort Myers, Florida in July, 1968.  He earned Bachelor of Music and Master Music degrees from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of South Florida.  He served as Minister of Music-Youth at Una Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee; Minister of Music-Education at Woodlawn Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida; Minister of Music-Youth, First Baptist Church, Fort Myers, Florida; and Minister of Music-Administration, First Baptist Church, Sarasota, Florida.  He is a member of and certified by the National Association of Church Business Administration and Southern Baptist Church Business Administration.  He was President of the latter organization in 1995.  He has been named to Strathmore's Who's Who 14th Edition.

Jim is married to Susan Dianne Martin and they have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Carey Cannon, Minister of Music

 Carey Cannon became the Minister of Music at Providence in the Fall of 2004.  He is a native of Greenville, South Carolina.

 Carey is a graduate of Furman University in Greenville.  Following college, he was a member of the US Army Chorus for appoximately four years.

Carey received a DMA degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in late 2012.

  Carey is married to Janet Duncan Cannon and they have two children.

Rev. Julia Wright, Minister of Children and Families

 Julia Wright serves Providence as the Minister with Children and their Families.  She ministers to children from birth through grade 5 and well as ministering to their families.    She also provides leadership to our weekday education ministry for preschoolers.  She was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1995 by the First Baptist Church of Dalton, Georgia.  Julia has an undergraduate education degree from Wake Forest University and a master’s of religious education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  The first church that Julia served was Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi.  Then she served 16 years on the staff of First Baptist Church of Dalton, Georgia.  Julia has served across the southeast as a conference leader and consultant in preschool ministry.  She has also written missions curriculum for preschoolers for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  She is currently working on a project of developmentally appropriate books for infants and toddlers that use Bible conversation.  Julia is also a member of several networking groups for children’s ministers.

Rev. Andy Smith, Min. to Youth and Families

ANDY SMITH joined our ministry team in September of 2009.  He has previously served as Minister to Students at Vinton Baptist Church near Roanoke, VA and Associate Pastor/Minister to Students at Wieuca Road Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA.  He received his bachelor;s degree in Religious Studies from Gardner-Webb University and a master's degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling from M. Christopher White School of Divinity.  

Andy was born and raised in Charlotte, NC where he met his wife Samantha while attending Charlotte Christian School.  Andy and Samantha have one daughter and one son.  

He has a passion for providing an opportunity and space for students to encounter God through the developmental period in life known as adolescents. Along with student ministry he enjoys a quality cup of coffee, a great book, being outside, spending time with his family, watching Carolina Panthers football and going on mission trips.

Mr. Randy Ballard, Activities Director

RANDY BALLARD is Providence's Activities Director.  He has been in this position since January 1997.  Randy and his family were members of Providence and he worked for the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Concord, NC prior to assuming this position at the church.  At Providence he coordinates all sports and fitness programs in addition to planning and facilitating church-wide fellowship and activities.  He is responsible for the Activities Center containing a gym, activity room, exercise room, and a walking/running track. 

The Activities Ministry tries to provide a safe, non-threatening introduction to Providence through sports and recreation.  The Ministry also promotes fun, fitness, and fellowship among the membership.

Randy earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Appalachian State University majoring in Physical Education and Recreation.

  DREW HERRING is our Ministerial Resident, beginning in the summer of 2011.  He is a graduate of the University of  North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke Divinity School . His specific assignment are "Young Professionals."  However, he is active in all aspect of the church's ministry. Drew will be with us for at least eighteen months. 

 He is married to Jenny King Herring who is a Physical Therapist.
