Family Mission Trip in July
Family Mission Trip in July

On May 11-12, four Providence members delivered miscellanesous items, collected during the past several months, to three different locations in eastern Kentucky.  A significant number of luggage pieces were delivered to the Youth Services Director at Owsley County High School.  Luggage and other items were delivered to the Nada Mission in the Nada community.  The remaining items were stored at the home of Paula Settle, our missionary in the area, for future distribution as needed.  In addition to luggage, household goods, fabric and knitting supplies, craft supplies, and toiletries items were delivered.  Those making the trip were Jackie Kirkman, Ward Mullis, Linda Mullis, and Jim Marin, Church Business Administrator.

Fourth Annual "Book Buddies" Project to Owsley County and Nada in Eastern Kentucky was conducted June 17-21. Those who made the trip will visited in many homes to give books to children of all ages.  Books will also be given to the elementary school for the library.  This year, over 2,000 books, donated by Providence members, were distributed in the community of Nada and in Owsley County.   Those who are interested in participating in the 2008 "Book Buddies" project should contact Cindy Brewer at 704.365.5424.

Family Mission Trip to Owsley was July 22-27.  In addition to working with students in the area on crafts, cooking projects, and home renovations, field trips were conducted to near-by placees on interest on selected days.  The 2007 trip will be the third such event and fourteen Providence members participated in the project.  Approximately twenty-five youth from the Nada community and Owsley county were involved in the activities during the week.  A special thanks is extended to Ted, Kathy, Ryan, and Evan Sparks for their participation in this mission project for the third consecutive year.

In 2007, three specific trips to Eastern Kentucky have been conducted by Providence members.  These included a trip to deliver luggage and other supplies, "Book Buddies",  and the Family Mission Trip.  Additional trips will occur between now and the end of the year.

MEET OUR MISSIONARY IN KENTUCKY:

Providence has made a longterm commitment to mission work in Owsley County and Nada, Kentucky through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s (CBF) Rural Poverty Initiative, Together for Hope. Through a partnership Providence, with other Kentucky churches, specifically First Baptist Church of Frankfort, Kentucky, national and state CBFs, an on-site missionary/social worker has been employed.

Paula was been designated as a Missionary Affiliate with the Global Missions program of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  This recognition was awarded at the CBF General Assembly in Washington, DC in June, 2007.

Paula Settle, originally from Owensboro, KY,
has been a missionary to Togo, Africa. She has served various churches and ministries. Paula moved to Eastern Kentucky from Knoxville, TN.

Since its beginning as a church, Providence Baptist has been involved in missions in the USA.

Initially, the means through which a church member participated in national missions was by giving offerings for state and home (national) missions.  Various mission boards/agencies received the money and sponsored career missionaries to do the work of missions.

IN MORE RECENT TIMES, the members of Providence have been participating in "hands on" missions activities in our country.  Volunteer mission teams have undertaken projects in our own state of North Carolina such as disaster relief after Hurricane Floyd in 1999.  In addition, mission work in Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, Oklahoma, New York, and Mississippi has involved members of Providence including adults and students.

For the summer of 2005, our Youth Mission Tour project was working with a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship ministry in Miami, Florida entitled "Touching Miami with Love."

For 2006, the College Mission Tour and the High School Mission tour is to Tutwiler, Mississippi to work with the local Habitat for Humanity to build new homes for many of the homeless in the area and provide Vacation Bible School for local residents.  For more information on these mission endeavors, please go to the Youth/Student page on this web-site.

In 2007, our College Mission Tour traveled to San Antonio, Texas to work with D.O.O.R. with some inter-city mission projects.  The date of that trip was May 25-30. Also in 2007,  the Middle School Mission Tour worked with D.O.O.R in Atlanta, Georgia the week of June 10 - 15.

The High School Mission Tour for 2007 will be to South Dakota to work with the Lakota tribe on the Indian Reservation.  The date of this trip will be June 21-30 and more than 65 high school students and adult sponsors will be making the trip.

The Rural Poverty Initiative in Kentucky is our most recent National mission endeavor.  More information on our mission endeavors in Eastern Kentucky can be found on this section of the web-site.

At Providence Baptist Church, we still give our money to missions in the USA, AND we give our individual personal efforts.  Through these mission projects, missions has a personal touch and a lasting impression on both the receiver and the giver.

We invite you to participate in National Missions with us.  For more information, contact us at our telephone number at the bottom of this page or e-mail us at info@providencebc.org.
