The College Missions Trip for 2009 to Eastern Kentucky was completed on May 28. The mission objective was to repair homes in Powell County. Renovation of homes will be under the direction of Harold Eddins and our Pastor Al Cadenhead. A report on this mission trip will be made on "Missions Report Night" scheduled for August 5. For more information, email: BETH MCCONNELL.
The Sixth annual "Book Buddies Trip" to Eastern Kentucky was held in June. We distributed children's books and magazines AND adult books and magazines in the Nada community and through the elementary school in Owsley County. During the month of May, members of the church donated new and "gently" used books to be taken and distributed by our "Book Buddies." The books were examined and arranged into categories by the WMU of the church prior to their delivery to children and adults in the counties of Owsley and Powell. If you are interested in this project, especially as we look forward to 2010, please contact Cindy Brewer.
The 2009 Family Kentucky Summer Mission Trip was held July 19 - 23. Seventeen of our members traveled to Eastern Kentucky where their efforts were coordinated by our missionary in the area, Paula Settle. Various activities and projects were undertaken to improve housing and provide "wholesome" activities for the youth of the area.
In summer 2008, the fourth annual Family Kentucky Summer Mission Trip traveled to Eastern Kentucky, July 20-24. Under the coordination of Minister of Adult Education, Beth McConnell, this trip worked with middle and high school students. After our visits there, thirteen students from the area visited us in Charlotte during the Christmas holidays in 2008.
The CBF's Rural Poverty Initiative "Together for Hope" was adopted by Providence as a special 50th anniversary missions program. By design, Providence's participation was not intended to be a one-time event. Rather, it was visioned that our involvement in this missions endeavor would involve Providence members of all ages for years and touch many lives in this area of our country. The original objectives have been realized. Our church members have made many trips to Eastern Kentucky and we have taken a variety of materials to assist the residents. Some of the items include: school supplies, shoes, coats, luggage, toiletry items, clothes, books, and most of all, hope. Also Providence gave a van to the School Board of one county. We look forward to our continuation in this missions project of our church.
