Current Series - Sunday Comics: Prophets, Priests, & Kings

The terms—prophets, priests, and kings—have dual meanings in the Bible.

After the great exodus from Egypt, God’s new nation of Israel was established. Moses and Joshua were gone; the people were looking for leadership and guidance. First were the priests or judges, those chosen by God to pass his judgments and commands on to the people. Next, the people of Israel decided they needed an earthly king, like other nations, to lead them. Finally, in their exile, without an earthly king, God chose prophets to remind Israel of why they were there and of his plans to restore his nation.

These terms—prophet, priest, and king—also apply to Jesus. While on earth, Jesus was a prophet of God spreading the message of his power, judgment, and grace. Priests in the Old Testament were responsible for making sacrifices for the people’s sins. Jesus, in his crucifixion, made the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Finally, as prophesied in both the Old and New Testaments, Jesus is our King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

These lessons are, first and foremost, a study of Scripture— understanding the whole story, the big picture, how it all works together. God`s Word cannot always be understood in single verses; sometimes it takes a whole story, chapter, or book to get the message. And it’s fun to see how all the stories connect with repeated themes.
